There is a host of prescription drugs out there which are regarded as minor tranquilizers. These include Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, and Valium which give a relatively quick reduction of anxiety and stress symptoms.
I was using Xanax as my safe guard during my worst times of managing my anxiety disorder. I had them in my car, draws, bags, pockets, wallet and just about anywhere just in case I needed them. They saved me from some dark times, but I was all to easily reaching for them without trying alternative methods. It felt almost impossible to be anywhere with out them close to me.
Doctors are too easily handing out these drugs and people not even trying natural alternatives before heading down the path of what could be a possible addiction.
Natural supplements are not as strong and may not be as effective with the highest bought of anxiety (especially if you are currently taking minor tranquilizers). But following some important anxiety relief tips, natural supplements can be used as an alternative and your body will love you for it.
When I fully weened myself of all prescription drugs, I found the following supplements helpful through stressful events to give quick relief.
My grandmother got me onto Passionflower drops. She brought me a bottle at a time in my life when I was very ill with anxiety. I like Passionflower drops as it was easy to take and wouldn’t make me drowsy.
You just add about 7-10 drops in a glass of water or if you need a quicker effect, put the drops under your tongue.
The Valerian plant is native to Europe and the root of this plant has been used for centuries as a sedative. Valerian is so old, it was used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome.
This is mostly found in a capsule form. I believe you can get in in an oil form but haven’t tried it before. I found that Valerian root worked very well for me but some formulas were too strong. I mainly use it for a sleep aid.
The only thing I didn’t like about using Valerian Root is that I found my self a bit groggy the morning after if I used it to help sleep. In saying this, it helped me sleep the best at times of high anxiety.
The best formula I found was from Zhous Nutrition. Their formals has lower quantities of Valerian Root but also includes, GABA, Passion Flower and Melatonin. I found this formula didn’t feel groggy as the other brands.
The root of the Kava Kava plant found throughout cultures of Polynesia to produce a drink with sedative, anesthetic and euphoric affect to users. You can buy it as a powder from traditionalists and mix as a drink. Its tastes like dirt though.
I prefer to take it in tablet form and use a formula made by Kavana Supplements. They have cleverly mixed Kava Kava root with L-Theanine, Magnesium, 5 HTP and Valerian root. This will definitely take the edge off and generally knocks me for a good night sleep. This stuff will make you drowsy so don’t drive operate heavy machinery on this stuff.
Just be wary that Kava Kava root extract is heavy on the liver and to drink plenty of fluids to help flush it through your body.
Even when using any of these supplements, check with your doctor first and always follow the manufacturer’s directions.
